One thing that you may often see in our reviews is something like “I wasn’t sure if it was right at first, but after a few nights, I sleep better than ever with my Pluto Pillow!” This is because our pillows, like many other sleep products, have a brief adjustment period where both the body and the materials take time to get used to each other, aka a break-in period.
Why is there a break-in period?
In a perfect world, things like pillows and mattresses would give us perfect sleep right out of the box forever. While some are lucky enough to have such an experience (you may even see it mentioned in our reviews!), most folks need a bit of time for the pillow to feel like the right fit.
There are a few reasons for this, the first being that our materials are designed to hold their shape over time and last for years with proper maintenance. This does tend to make them feel a bit thick/firm at first, but much like how a high-quality pair of shoes can feel a bit uncomfortable at first, the materials will “loosen up” with a few nights’ use and go on to provide comfort for a long time to come.
The second reason has to do with our bodies. Many folks have used the same pillow for years and years. This old pillow may not be the most comfortable or provide the best support, but it gets the job done. When it comes time to bite the bullet and get a new one, every other pillow out there ends up feeling worse* because we have become so accustomed to the old pillow. It can take a bit of time for our bodies to adapt to the new style of sleeping from a new pillow or mattress, especially on a pillow like ours that doesn’t deflate throughout the night.
How long does it take to break in?
While everyone’s experience can be different, we have found that around 2 weeks is when our materials have settled into their final loft/support level. This is a good amount of time to try the pillow out and allow it to adjust to how you sleep (and vice versa!). There are a few things you can do to help speed up this process if you’d like as well:
- Place a heavy object such as a weight into the center for a few hours
- Give the whole pillow itself a couple of very good squishes and squeezes before using it each night
- Unzip the pillow and squish each component separately to help get rid of any residual stiffness
What do I do if the pillow is still not right after the adjustment period?
While we’re very fortunate to get the custom Pluto Pillow just right on the first try, sometimes we miss the mark! If you’ve found that the pillow still isn’t right after the initial adjustment period (or conversely, it was perfect at first and now it doesn’t feel quite right!), get in touch with us! We’re always happy to explore any available adjustments or help you out with a return and refund.
