The short answer: No
The long answer: It’s a bit complicated
Every pillow we craft is made from the highest quality, durable materials designed to provide long-term comfort for the best sleep possible. In our extensive research developing our products, we have found that the best way to achieve this is to use a mix of both organic and man-made materials. Our customers’ health and safety is our highest priority, and we only use materials that go above and beyond all Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations and standards.
Ok, so what goes into a Pluto Pillow then?
Great question! Here’s a quick breakdown of the materials we use:
Polyfoam: Custom Pillow, POD Travel Pillow
The foams in each custom and travel pillow are high-performance and high-grade synthetic foams that are designed to hold their shape for years. They are temperature-regulating and inherently antimicrobial. All of the foams we use are CertiPUR-US certified foams meaning they are made without ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP, or TCEP flame retardants, mercury, lead or other heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. They are also low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
Polyfill: Custom Pillow, PUFF body pillow
The Custom Pillow and PUFF body pillow each feature a plush element made from long, silky polyfill fibers that are thinner than human hair and individually blown to provide a soft, squishy and plush feel. Compared to down feathers, and even cotton which can clump up, these provide ample softness while still holding their shape throughout the night, all while being 100% washable.
Covers: Custom Pillow, PUFF body pillow, POD travel pillow
We have a variety of materials for the outer covers for each pillow. The Custom Pillows come with either a smooth, 100% eucalyptus cover or a quilted cooling cover that is woven with polyethylene (synthetic) fibers to create a cool-to-the-touch feeling. The PUFF body pillow has both a cotton outer cover and a removable cooling quilted cover.
But aren’t natural and organic materials better?
Not inherently so! The most important thing to consider is what’s best for you. Take latex for example: this is a plant-based material commonly used in pillows/mattresses. For some folks, this is the only material that works for them, but others are allergic and avoid it at all costs!
100% silk pillows are a popular option for temperature regulation, but the high cost and high maintenance doesn’t work for many people (especially when pillows should be replaced every 18 months or so!).
One other thing to watch out for is that terms like “natural” are not regulated by law. And products are often labeled “organic” if they have a portion of their materials are USDA Organic. Many independent organizations exist to help standardize the industry, but there are still plenty of bad actors capitalizing on the marketing buzz of “all-natural” products!
We’ve found that when done well, man-made materials can be just as high-quality and as comfortable as organic materials. This all said, we are always tweaking our designs and making changes to improve. Nothing is set in stone, so please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to share your thoughts!
