What gives?
Each custom Pluto Pillow is made with a hybrid design of a plush outer cover encasing a solid foam core. The specific types of foams we use (polyfoams) are anti-microbial, hold their shape for years, and aren’t heat sensitive (aka help keep things cool as a cucumber).
However, they are prone to releasing compounds into the air, i.e. off-gassing. We do our very best to air out these cores as much as possible, but sometimes there can still be a lingering scent.
Compounds? Are they safe?
Yes!
All of the foams we use are CertiPUR-US certified; that means no harmful ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP, or TCEP flame retardants, mercury, lead, or other heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates are used (regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission).
In plain English: any scent is not harmful and, just like with a new foam mattress, will go away rather quickly in a well-ventilated room.
How can I get rid of the scent?
If you would like to speed up the process a little, we recommend carefully unzipping the pillow, removing the foam core from the outer cover, and placing both components in a separate room with a few open windows (the bathroom is perfect for this—it’s already home to some…interesting smells). After a day or two, any lingering scent shouldn’t be noticeable! Some customers also find washing the outer cover according to our care instructions also helps to take away any remaining scent.
If anything still isn’t right with your pillow, please let us know and we’ll be happy to help you out. We want to make sure you have the best experience with your Pluto Pillow!
